Details
(Solution: App 2 of 2) Jump Start your Splunk knowledge, skillset, and understanding with a self-driven journey through aligned Splunk Use Case examples. If your new to Splunk or have new Splunkers on your team, this is the perfect solution to map out and explore the best path between Splunk's Value to top Use Cases. This solution provides example dashboards, reports, interactive walkthroughs and knowledge content that specifically aligns to your defined Use Case(s). Use Cases include Security, IT Ops, Business Analytics, Internet of Things/Industrial Data as well as core Splunk.
**IMPORTANT** This solution consist of two required applications: Value Journey for Splunk and the Value Journey Manager for Splunk, https://splunkbase.splunk.com/app/4566/.
Value Journey for Splunk is the application new Splunk Users will use to ramp up their Splunk Skills and Knowledge.
Value Journey Manager for Splunk is the application Splunk Admins/Owners will use to configure, manage and support the "Journey Users" as they progress through the Value Journey for Splunk application.
Please review the steps in the Details section, or in the Value Journey Manager for Splunk's "VJM - Getting Started" dashboard.

Description:

  • Value Journey for Splunk is an application to help jumpstart a new Splunker's journey with Splunk by mapping their Use Case and learning goals of Splunk with aligned Walkthroughs, Knowledge Content, and Example Reports/Dashboards of Splunk Value.
  • IMPORTANT: This application requires the installation and configuration of the Value Journey Manager for Splunk application. Review the Details steps using the above link for more information.
  • Value Journey Manager for Splunk is the required, secondary, application for the Splunk Admins, "Owners" to use for preparing the Value Journey for Splunk application for the New Splunkers.

Required Companion App - Value Journey Manager for Splunk App:

Important: This solution consist of two separate, required, applications: * Value Journey for Splunk:
* The current selected application which is for the targeted New Splunkers that will be exploring the Use Case example walkthroughs, dashboards, reports and knowledge content. * Value Journey Manager for Splunk:
* This companion application is used by the Splunk Admins, Owners, to configure, manage and support the Users as they progress through the Value Journey for Splunk application.

Value Journey for Splunk - User Flow:

  • Note: The below flow is only available to the User after the Splunk Admin/Owner has completed all of the Preperation steps using the Value Journey Manager for Splunk application.
  • Step 1: First Access - Initial Configuration Wizard (Required):
    • The first time any of the New created Users login to Splunk, or access the Value Journey for Splunk application, they will be automatically directed to the Initial Configuration Wizard. This is a step by step view that provides the following configurations options for the User for determining what example dashboards, reports and walkthroughs will be available to them:
      • Verify, and optionally update, their contact information.
      • Selected and rank the Use Cases and Sub Use Case Categories that best match their journey goals.
      • Selected data type categories that align with their environment and selected use cases.
  • Step 2: Splunk Core Overview (Required):
    • After the Initial Configuration Wizard is completed, the User will be directed to a quick Splunk Core Overview.
      • This overview walkthrough quickly covers the basics of What is Machine Data, main Splunk functions, and key differentiators with Splunk.
  • Step 3: Splunk Use Case Overview (Recommended):
    • Depending on the Users Use Case Selections they will be Recommended to complete the quick overview walkthroughs of the Selected Use Cases.
      • Each Splunk Use Case Overview provides high level information, including an overview of the Use Case, example scenarios, usage and customer case studies.
  • Step 4: Splunk Walkthroughs (Recommended):
    • Users will be guided to complete several of the Interactive, Step By Step walkthroughs, such as the Splunk Search Tutorial, Getting Started with Security, etc. These walkthroughs are interactive, where the user will be following simple steps and performing the steps actions from the same dashboard.

  • Step 5: Free Explore the other Use Case and Splunk Core Example Dashboards/Reports:

    • Users can now freely explore the many different, and informative Dashboards/Reports that provide real world examples of using Splunk.

  • My Journey guide:

    • To assist the User's progression through their journey, the My Splunk Journey dashboard is their landing page and will show which items have been viewed, completed, or are pending. They will also have the My Splunk Journey Notes dashboard to review any entered notes, and ranking of the dashboards by them using the Value Journey Helper slide out that is available to them on all the dashboards.
  • Helper Slide Out
    • On every dashboard there is a slideout panel where Users can enter notes or request assistance on the dashboard.
    • Third Party Software: The Helper Slide out leverages the Sliderpanel component from the Developer Gadget App for Splunk application which has the following licensing:
      • License
        • Developer Gadget App for Splunk app and the author's content are released under the BSD 3-Clause "New" or "Revised" License.
      • The Dashboard Slider libraries are under copyright of OctoInisght Inc. (previously included in the Layer8Insight App for Splunk), and was authored by Ryan Thibodeaux.
