This app is designed to provide insight into the Boss of the SOC (BOTS) version 1 data set. To use the app, you will want to download our BOTS v1 dataset from http://explore.splunk.com/BOTS_1_0_datasets. There are two data sets available, one is just the attack data and the other has some additional "noise". Both will work with this app. Follow the instructions provided with the dataset to install the data and the accompanying technical add-ons. The app is designed to look in the BOTSv1 index for this data.
The tgz of the full data set is 6.5GB downloaded and 9.25GB uncompressed. The attack data set is 135MB downloaded and 340MB uncompressed. You cannot use the GUI to install the full data set due to the size of it. The installation for both data sets is identical.
Extract the directory structure from the tgz file. This can be done using whatever extraction tool you are most comfortable with.
When the extraction is complete, you will see a directory structure that looks like a standard Splunk app. The one difference is that there is a /var/lib/splunk/botsv1 directory that contains the events. This is by design. The indexes.conf file in the app maintains the pointer to this directory. Do not modify this structure!!!
Copy/Move the entire extracted BOTS directory into the $SPLUNK_HOME/etc/apps directory. Start Splunk, open a search and run an All time search for index=botsv1 to validate your installation.
