Overview

Splunk for A10 Networks provides visibility into the ADC logs, allowing to detect and analyze Web traffic, trends, and Web threats.

Features

  • Server Load Balancing traffic by Request, Response Time, and Size
  • Web Application Firewall stats, such as: Top Allowed/Deniend Clients, Top Policy actions, Top Attacks, and more
  • Field extractions for SLB and WAF logs

Installation Instructions

The Splunk for A10 Networks can be installed by either the Splunk app setup screen, or by manually installing and configuring the app.

Once the app is installed, you need to do some configurations in your Splunk server and in the A10 Networks ADC. For detailed instructions please refer to the document gettingstarted.pdf located in SPLUNK_HOME/etc/apps/SplunkForA10Networks/appserver/static/gettingstarted.pdf.

NOTE: The WAF module is a new feature of the v2.7.1 ACOS code, in case you have an earlier version you will need to upgrade your appliance.

Splunk Configuration

  • You have to create a new index named 'a10networks'
  • Configure a new data input for udp/514 port. If this port is already being used by other source, you will have to reflect this change in the props.conf file: SPLUNK_HOME/etc/apps/SplunkForA10Networks/etc/props.conf

The app does source typing automatically for you. ADC's logs will have different source types depending of the type of log:
- SLB logs -> a10_slb
- WAF logs -> a10_waf

A10 Networks ADC Configuration

You will have to do a 2-step configuration in your ADC:

1. Web Access logs (SLB)

  • 1.1. Configure the Splunk server IP and port in the syslog section in System settings
  • 1.2. Add the aFleX code for logging, you can find it in the gettingstarted.pdf doc, or in SPLUNK_HOME/etc/apps/SplunkForA10Networks/appserver/static/logging_w3c.aflex
  • 1.3. Associate your new aFleX code to an existing Virtual Service

2. Web Application Firewall logs (WAF)

  • 2.1. Create a server node for your Splunk server
  • 2.2. Create a Service Group associated to the Splunk node
  • 2.3. Create a logging template, associated to the Service Group recently created
  • 2.4. Create, or modify an existing WAF template, and add your Logging Template

Enjoy!
